| yo. i'm back from the dead or something. not really.
i just haven't updated this thing in forever. so here we
go. holy shit, its been a while. anyway, i've almost made
to the end of my freshman year (one more week) in the most stressful
program (musiced) at one of the most stressful colleges in the country
(eastman). i don't really know that for a fact, because i haven't
attended any other colleges, but oh well, i like making assumptions
based on nothing. none of that matters. what matters is
that i'm now a performance major because i kicked my jury's ass.
that doesn't mean much, because i still really suck and mess up a lot
and forget stuff during performances, but...i had one kick ass
performance w/ out a single memory slip. that's a start. i
will definitely miss screwing around with my clarinet class buddies,
but that's not quite enough to make me want to double major, so i'm
just doing performance for now.
I'M ALMOST DONE!!!!!! i don't even know what i'm going to do with
myself. other than play basketball every day possible, practice,
watch movies, hang out with friends, and relax. actually, i think
that's pretty much all i'm going to do this summer, until i go to
camp. I'm an assistant dorm head at this camp that my roomie's
grandpa runs. that's going to be pretty hilarious. me
telling kids to go to bed. hahaha.
so the eastman school of music- or, as we've lovingly been calling it
recently, the eastman school of go fuck yourself (its the end of the
year, we're all burnt out)- has taught me some interesting
things. here's a few that soon to be college freshman especially should
read, and that i'm sure most current freshman can really appreciate:
1) just eat it. don't ask questions.
2) except for the vegetable quesadillas. don't eat those.
3) if you do end up eating the vegetable quesadillas, you should cancel your lesson that is an hour after you ate them.
4) 8:30 is really really really really early.
5) don't get mad at the guy who broke your lounge's tv when he
was totally baked-it might actually improve your social life.
6) crossroads people-listen to nora.
7) mahler is a bad ass.
8) real is good.
9) if you didn't cancel your lesson after you ate the quesadillas, just be strong. you can hold it!
10) toronto=fun.
11) good food is worth the cash.
12) no parallel fifths or octaves, don't double the leading tone,
yes that is a cadential 6/4 what the hell else would it be?,
counterpoint sucks, moveable do is the shit, do your stick control,
stop sucking, etc.
ok i could think of a ton more but i'm bored so i'm going to go do
something else...like play mario party with kyle matt and tom.
yeah...that sounds sufficiently geeky. PEACE, I'M OUT for
now.

| BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
F YOU, JIMMY FALLON!
i feel...kinda like the dinosaurs must have felt when they started dying and shit.
only not really.
i need to have my piece for composition class read through on november 29th. i'm about 3/4 of the way done with it, but i just realized that about half the stuff i wrote i really don't like. and, even though the transitions are smooth, the different sections of the piece dont seem to fit together too well.
i played on one song in some girl's flute recital tonight, and one of the other pieces she played was a george crumb composition for "three masked players." flute, cello, and piano. it was so fucking cool. the piece would go from random instrument sound effects to really beautiful tonal stuff, but somehow everything pieced together perfectly.
i've been trying to compose all weekend and i've gotten nowhere.
f you, george crumb. | | |
| for those of you who are tenacious d fans, you will enjoy this. for those who don't know of them, stop reading this and go listen to some tenacious d. a bunch of us went to this party at the u of r last night. it was at the "drama house" or something like that. anyway, there was a terrible punk band playing, and they were really loud and annoying. but it was still fun, and we were meeting a lot of cool people, so we stuck around. most of us decided to chill in the basement, mainly because the band was upstairs. but after about an hour, trent (who was apparently upstairs at the time) ran down to the basement and was like "DUDE, EVERYONE COME UPSTAIRS, THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG!" so me and vivek ran up there, and, sure enough, they were playing "fuck her gently." they were mutilating it, no doubt, but it was still cool. so once they were finished, we screamed our heads off in praise of the song, and then rushed up onto the stage and asked if we could play "kielbasa sausage." they were totally chill, and let us use their instruments and everything. trent played drums, alex played guitar, vivek sang, and me and tom rocked out on backup vocals/dancing. i was the only on stage who wasn't intoxicated, but we still managed to ROCK THE HOUSE UNTIL THE CHIMNEY EXPLODED AND THE WINDOWS COMPLETELY SHATTERED. and then, to top everything off, the other band got back on and played "kyle quit the band," with the intro and everything. overall, a pretty killer night. | | |
